US and China: More words

The flood of news from the current doings in NY City continues, but it’s sounding more and more like less and less.

Obama wants worldwide end of fossil fuel subsidies:

President Barack Obama is calling on the world to end massive government subsidies that encourage the use of fossil fuels blamed for global warming.

The president, who is set . . . → Read More: US and China: More words

Free EV charging

Here’s something that I’ve been talking about for some time, businesses providing free EV recharging, (possibly) getting all or part of the electrons from solar PV panels, Bank debuts solar-powered electric car charge spots:

A bank chain in California will combine PV and EV–that is, an electric vehicle charge station equipped with solar photovoltaic panels.

Solar installer SolarCity . . . → Read More: Free EV charging

The three stooges, again

While eating my Cheerios this morning, one eye open and mostly focused, and trying to mentally boot without incurring another self-inflicted “spoon incident”, I spotted an article in the newspaper about the stunning U-turn China and India have made on climate issues.

The closest article I could find to the one I might have imagined is from . . . → Read More: The three stooges, again

Watching me watching you

As we creep (or sprint, depending on your expectations) ever closer to December’s Copenhagen climate meeting, there’s no shortage of opinions online and in meatspace about the prospects of reaching a “good” agreement, or even what would constitute a “good” agreement. Some opinions, of course, mean more than others, and TreeHugger has a short post . . . → Read More: Watching me watching you

Document alert: Solving the climate dilemma

WBGU (German Advisory Council on Global Change) has issued a report arguing that we take a “carbon budget” view of climate change.

The report, Solving the climate dilemma: The budget approach [65 page, 2.2MB PDF], takes the same basic view that I’ve expressed here, namely that we should start by looking at the total amount of CO2 . . . → Read More: Document alert: Solving the climate dilemma

China: 2C is “just a vision”

I feel like an idiot for not seeing this one coming from either China or India. It’s so painfully obvious, in hindsight, that I have to wonder how anyone who follows energy and environmental issues closely could have failed to predict it.

What am I babbling about? China is now saying that the endlessly discussed . . . → Read More: China: 2C is “just a vision”

The three stooges of climate change

Reading the international climate change news recently has reminded me more than a little of The Three Stooges, those kings of physical comedy that permanently warped at least one generation of Americans. Sadly, our modern day climate stooges are toying with something far more important than our sense of humor as they jostle for position . . . → Read More: The three stooges of climate change

Slip slidin’ away

Greenland icesheet could melt faster than thought: study:

The Greenland icesheet responded to global warming over the past 10,000 years more quickly than thought, according to a study released Wednesday.

As a result, a medium-sized temperature increase this century could cause the continent-sized ice block to start melting at an alarming rate, it suggests.

“It is entirely possible that . . . → Read More: Slip slidin’ away

Deniers and their enablers

Some days I miss self-imposed limits more than anything else from the dim and receding past.

Case in point, the pointless kerfuffle over the cost of a cap and trade system to address climate change. Cap-and-Trade Memos Fire Up the Skeptics (emphasis added):

The latest flare-up occurred this week when the Competitive Enterprise Institute, which . . . → Read More: Deniers and their enablers

Methane checkpoint

It’s been some time since I created[1] and displayed the current atmospheric methane graph from the NOAA site, so here it is:

As you can see, the current surge in methane levels, which began in late 2006, is still going strong.

One thing that prompted me to post this was the appearance in my news feeds this morning . . . → Read More: Methane checkpoint
