Video alert: Arctic oscillation

The always excellent Climate Denial Crock of the Week video series has a particularly good installment about the Arctic oscillation, the weather pattern that recently made it cold in the backyard of deniers, which enticed them to tell the world myths about how there was no global warming even though other parts of the planet were much warmer than normal. (I wonder if there’s a way to con such people by handing them $10,000 in shiny gold trinkets while withdrawing $100,000 from their savings. Seems like the same immediate and visible vs. distant and less visible contrast they so love. But I digress.)

The video is embedded below, and is available on YouTube here.

Please note: The creator of these videos, Pete Sinclair, has indicated in that he was going to replace this video with one that corrected a misspelling and then delete the old one. (YouTube won’t let you edit things in place, for the obvious “keeping a sharp object out of the hands of evil morons” kind of reason, so Pete doesn’t have a choice but to re-upload and then delete.) I think I’ve managed to link to the second, updated version. If not, and this one disappears, please let me know and I will update this post as needed.

And, of course, you should follow all of Pete’s videos in this series. His YouTube collection is here.

  • A good overview of temps…by Jeff

One interesting note: the NASA global average temperature for 2009 was .57°C above average. NOAA’s was .56°C above average. These temperatures were just .06°C below the all-time hottest year on record, 2005. The 11-year global sunspot cycle causes a variation of 0.1°C between the maximum and minimum of the solar cycle. We are currently at a deep minimum of the solar cycle
