Wide open thread by at 10:51 AM on January 23, 2008.

Let’s try a little experiment: An open thread like those on DailyKos, one where youse guys kick off the conversation. (I’ll post some links an’ such later today. Right now, I’m up to my baby browns in outline and research work on The Book, which is going pretty well, thank you very much for asking.)

So, what’s on your e+e overloaded minds today?

Recommended thing I just stumbled across: The need for an international moratorium on coal power by James Hansen

Holy cow, maybe all the people like me who endlessly annoy others about switching to CFL’s are finally having an impact: Sales of Compact Fluorescent Lights Jump to 20% of the Market

I bought and installed over 100 CFLs 18 months ago (only a dozen in my home!–most went into my parents’ and siblings houses). I also made the case that my 300 unit apartment building could save ~$10k/yr on electric bills by using CFLs in all the back stairways–lights are always on (for some reason they replaced the lights in the front hallways with CFLs several years ago…and then halted the program). I’ve noticed they are now using CFLs in the back stairways when the inefficient bulbs die.
So I feel like I’m doing my part ;)

The quirky things about getting people to adopt CFL’s is most businesses will quickly convert once they see the monetary advantage, but individual households are a different matter. Some would use them for the sake of being green, even if they were more expensive (incl. the cost of electricity), some are swayed by the savings, and some just won’t get off their lazy butt and change a freakin’ light bulb. (One friend bought bulbs for her mother and installed them, and the woman changed them back to incandescents. Oy.)

When my wife and I go for a walk in our neighborhood at night, we’re dismayed by all the houses we pass where [1] every room is lit up like Broadway, and [2] you can tell from the yellowish color of the light that they’re obviously not using CFL’s. I guess some people are just “so busy” that they don’t mind spending four times what they need to for lighting and they don’t care about all that unnecessary CO2 they’re adding to the atmosphere.

    People. Go figure.

CFL’s are lots more efficient than incandescents - we noticed a significant drop in electricity consumption following replacement of bulbs with CFL’s - but will we be swapping them all them for even better LED’s in a few years time? LED’s keep getting brighter and are going to end up with more acceptable colour. Meanwhile proper disposal of CFL’s is an issue - lots won’t be properly disposed of, though I intend making an effort to do so when the time comes.
